- Abstract:
In recent years, the demand for seafood has grown in Hong Kong, as well as the world generally. In Hong Kong, however, demand for locally sourced frozen seafood declined from thirty and one-halfpercent in 2014 to twenty-seven and nine-tenths percent in 2016. As the overall demand for seafood has grown, this decrease shows that Hong Kong increasingly relies on imported seafood. Currently, in Hong Kong, seafood labels contain little information about the seafood or seafood products therein. Consumers can increase their confidence in selecting seafood products with the aid of seafood labels. Seafood labels are an appropriate tool for informing consumers about the name of the product, history of the product, production method (wild or farm-raised), and country of origin. What information should seafood labels contain? As there is no framework for analyzing seafood labeling regimes, we created one. We created our framework by analyzing the seafood labeling schemes in four jurisdictions: China, the United States, Australia, and Canada. We then applied this framework to Hong Kong's seafood labeling regime. Hong Kong's seafood labeling system contains weaknesses. Thus, we recommend possible solutions for these weaknesses.
